The release of Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo is a hard-fought victory, but it must not mark the end of our action. It is a critical inflection point that defines the future of activism, particularly for young people operating across the East African Community (EAC).

The Free Kenya Movement (FKM) is now shifting its focus from crisis response to strategic engagement, ensuring this dangerous precedent of transnational repression is firmly challenged and dismantled.

🛡️ Strategic Focus: Safeguarding Activists

Based on the harsh realities exposed by the Njagi and Oyoo case, FKM is launching two key initiatives:

  1. The FKM Legal Defense and Safety Fund: This permanent mechanism will be established to provide immediate legal support and, where necessary, facilitate the extraction and protection of activists targeted in cross-border operations. We will work with regional legal bodies to standardize protocols for rapid response to enforced disappearances.
  2. Digital and Physical Security Training: Njagi and Oyoo’s abduction highlighted severe security vulnerabilities. FKM will institute mandatory training for all members on digital security, counter-surveillance, and the legal rights of foreign nationals, particularly within EAC member states.

⚖️ Demanding Regional Accountability

We will use the documented evidence of torture and illegal detention to press for action at the regional level:

  • East African Court of Justice (EACJ) Filing: FKM and our legal partners are exploring filing a case against the Ugandan government at the EACJ in Arusha. The core argument will be that the arbitrary detention and torture of the activists violated fundamental provisions of the EAC Treaty and the Protocol on the Establishment of the EAC Common Market, which guarantee the free movement and safety of persons.
  • Engagement with Regional Parliamentarians: We will lobby the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) to debate a motion formally condemning the abduction and pressing for regional safeguards that prevent the use of national security apparatuses to stifle cross-border civic action.

🌟 Message to Kenyan Youth (Gen Z)

To the vibrant and politically conscious youth—the core of FKM—we say this: Do not let fear define your future.

The actions of those who detained Bob and Nicholas were an attempt to instill fear and paralyze dissent. We must respond with strategic boldness and unwavering commitment to the constitutional ideals we cherish. Our mission remains to build a Free Kenya and a democratic East Africa.

The story of Bob and Nicholas is a testament to resilience. Join us as we turn their pain into purpose.
